How Azure OpenAI retires models

Microsoft sets a generally available model’s retirement date when it launches it, 18 months out, and the Models API returns it. At 12 months the model is deprecated: a subscription that has deployed it can still create and manage deployments, but new customers can’t use it. Microsoft names the replacement about 90 to 120 days before retirement, and emails subscription owners with active deployments at least 60 days before, with an advisory in Azure Service Health. Preview models get at least 30 days’ notice. Generally available models from Anthropic, DeepSeek, Fireworks and Mistral AI follow a 12-month lifecycle instead. The lifecycle and support policy has the details.

On retirement day, every inference request returns 410 Gone. Global Standard, Data Zone Standard and Standard deployments are upgraded to the replacement automatically, unless the deployment is set to never upgrade, in which case it stops working. Provisioned deployments are never upgraded and need a manual move. Retirement dates aren’t extendable, and Microsoft can retire a model early, with shortened notice, for a security or compliance issue.
