How xAI retires models

xAI announces retirements in its release notes, each with a migration guide named after its day. In its latest ones, calls to a retired name did not fail. Since May 15, 2026 at 12:00 PM PT, requests to the retired Grok models are redirected to grok-4.3 and billed at grok-4.3’s price. Since November 2, 2026, requests to grok-imagine-image-quality are served by grok-imagine-image-2.0 at low quality; that retirement came with a 60-day notice period, which began on September 2, 2026.

A redirect changes the model behind the name and the bill, so xAI recommends switching the model yourself, to choose what you pay for rather than take the redirect’s default. Its model names come in three forms: <modelname> points to the latest stable version, <modelname>-latest to the latest version, and <modelname>-<date> to one release that is never updated.

No xAI model has a shutdown day ahead in Okapi's records.
