# GET /api/things is deprecated

Open Library API deprecated GET /api/things without giving a shutdown date yet.

Open Library API has deprecated the GET /api/things endpoint without a shutdown date. It is part of the legacy JSON API, which is currently preserved for backward compatibility. Once removed, requests to this endpoint will fail.

## What to use instead

Use the Search API (/search.json) or the Works, Editions and Authors APIs (/works/{id}.json, /books/{id}.json, /authors/{id}.json) instead.

- API: Open Library API (openlibrary.org)
- Kind: Endpoint removal
- Takes effect: no date given yet
- Calls after that day: fail
- Calls it hits: `GET /api/things`
- Source: [Announcement](https://openlibrary.org/developers/api)
- Verified: November 6, 2026, against Open Library API's own pages
